Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots Review

It should be no secret by now that I like my games to actually be fun. This weird insistence of mine that I spend my time on something enjoyable has all too often kept me away from Point and Click adventure games. Much like seemingly every movie these days, most of what I’ve seen recently in the genre is some combination of dark, gritty, heart wrenching, emotional… well you get the point. Since story is such a big part of P & C games and I get my fill of those types of stories in literally every other form of media lately I’ve been on an extended hiatus since the time of Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People. Finally though that drought has been broken as I recently checked out Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots.

*Fair warning, I will do my very best to not divulge any major spoilers, puzzles, full plot, etc., but there may be some very minor ones included. *

The story starts with Captain Disaster in desperate need of some funds. Egged on by his ships AI, named ZB, Captain Disaster opts to take on a delivery mission. Simple right, what can go wrong? Well he is named Captain Disaster after all and if it was just that straight forward that wouldn’t make for much of a game now would it? Upon landing CD needs to complete some tasks to acquire transporter tags to get the package to his ship. Then “simply” deliver said package to it’s destination, easy money. 

Ok, that is a bit of an extremely brief description, but rest assured it is far more complicated than it sounds. So let’s switch gears and talk about the puzzles shall we. Old school point and click games on which this is styled often garnered a reputation for some rather obtuse solutions to problems. CD:DhaMSB manages to make some of the puzzles difficult, but still logical in their solution. To be fair I once worked somewhere that produced a game that had a rather infamous Rubber Duck as part of a puzzle and I bet they thought that solution was logical too. Luckily though these are far more on the, actual logical a normal person would follow than my example.

I had intended on not consulting the walkthrough at all, however that quickly went out the window and partly due to some time constraints on my part, and had to sheepishly look at it for a puzzle in each of the 3 acts. Some of that may have been due to my rustiness with these types of games, but for the most part I’d recommend not only picking up items, but making sure to look at them too. They were enjoyable though and were quite thorough. I spent a good 6 hours or so completing the game even with the occasional help. So estimating 8-10 hours, if you want to figure everything out on your own, may be a closer tally of total time.

 

The puzzles aren’t the only enjoyable part of the game though, the story is absolutely delightful. If you like a humor filled sci-fi tale chocked to the brim with references from many different science fiction properties then you won’t be disappointed. I’m pretty sure I even spotted some Benny Hill in there as well, although I’m not sure if that’s where that particular gag originated (it also made a lot of appearances in Scooby-Doo as well in my time). Either way I always had a smile on my face. Ostensibly games are suppose to be fun, but actually getting people to laugh in them is hard to do. I had no trouble at all chuckling at a lot of it, including a bit where someone is having trouble turning their translator to Brummie. Granted that should get more chuckles across the pond from me, but still was done in such a way to be funny to even those of us who have only the loosest of understanding and the ability to infer a thing or two.

Last but not least, the art style in game perfectly completes the tone and calls back that old point and click era. I’m no art critic, but I know what I like when I see it and I really like the art in the game. I can’t talk about the art without mentioning a bang up job with the voice acting as well. I found the parts to be well done and help bring an already amusing story to life. About the only critique I have there is that I wouldn’t have minded the robotic voices sounding slightly more robotic. Although that I’m sure can be tricky to get just right.

Final thoughts: if  you are in the mood for a good old school point and click this is a hard game to pass up. Even if that isn’t your forte, the story is a fun romp and to me really sells the game. Yes, it’s silly, zany and full of references, but we all need that from time to time. Buckle in and have fun, take your time and enjoy the ride. It was the perfect pick me up in a time of all too “heavy” stories everywhere you look. This is one game that I recommend wholeheartedly and if you’re looking to pick it up  you can do so HERE.

    Thanks for the review! Really glad you enjoyed it. I have to say you really “got” what we were aiming for with our game.

    (I’m not a Benny Hill fan though and found myself wondering what you are referring to as a possible reference there?!?!? I certainly don’t remember putting one in intentionally! :-D)

      It was the version of the “doorway gag”, been done in plenty of things, just the one that I thought of first for some reason 😛
